Herbert (Bert) Hall, born and bred in Sussex, moved to Marden with his wife Harriett in 1894, and initially rented the house and land at Poultry Farm; it was here that their son Herbert Ernest (HE) was born in 1896. Bert bought his first farm, Little Mill (now the main fruit handling and storage facility), in 1925, but it was not until after his death that the land he initially settled on at Poultry Farm was bought by HE in 1944. It is fitting that the land he first farmed in Marden is the site of Marden’s first vineyard planted in 2007 by his great grandson, Nicholas.
John was born to HE in 1927, and thirty years later, Peter, the current owner, was born to John; HE Hall & Son Ltd was incorporated in that self-same year.
Over the subsequent sixty years, John and Peter added neighbouring land, including Target Farm, Mill Farm and Foundation Farm, as and when it became available; the holding now covers 175 hectares of which just under fifty percent is farmed organically. The entire farm is managed under Higher and Mid-Tier Countryside Stewardship schemes where the emphasis is on producing high quality food in a manner that enhances every aspect of the natural world; The Company engages fully with the local community.
Two of Peter’s three sons are currently involved in and around the business; Adam, the eldest who now has a son of his own, Henry, deals with the day to day management whilst Hugo has built up and manages an oven ready game business – Hedgerow Game - which is based on the farm.
